Hello Sweatfree Supporters,

After many late nights, we are starting to get to the bottom of the dilemma
with our sweat-free-pdx email list. The issue began with a member requesting
to unsubscribe to the listserve instead of the administrator. The list was
configured to reply to everyone instead of waiting for moderation. That is
why all of you received the first batch of emails. This confusing email
encouraged others to unsubscribe in the same fashion, or by hitting reply
and sending an email to many other random members on the list. Those who
have requested to be taken off the list have been removed. For those of you
who stuck it out, we have a solution!

To stop this chain of unwanted emails from bouncing around and filling up
more of your in boxes, we are going to shut down the sweat-free-pdx list and
put all of you on a global exchange listserve. You can expect a welcome
email from our new email list soon. Global Exchange has a full time IT
expert that maintains these lists. This very annoying issue has one benefit.
It is coming at an exciting time of transformation. The Portland Sweatfree
Campaign has evolved into The Sweatfree NW Campaign. We are expanding to new
frontiers to take on the state of Oregon and to lend support to our
neighbors to the north in Seattle.

Now we need your support more than ever to launch our Oregon Sweatfree
Campaign this spring. We are asking you to stand with us, once again, and
let Salem know that we do not want our tax money to subsidize sweatshop
abuses. As many of you know, the global garment industry is one of the most
exploitative industries in the world. Sweatshop conditions are not only a
problem abroad. Between 1995-2001 the U.S. Department of Labor surveyed
apparel centers located in the US and discovered that over half the
factories operated as sweatshops.

Sweatfree NW is joining over 180 cities, states and schools who have adopted
sweatfree purchasing policies that require full factory disclosure and
layout a sweatfree code of conduct for all vendors, contractors, and
subcontractors  to respect the International Labor Organization's standards
of non-poverty wages adjusted by labor markets, rights to assembly and
collective bargaining, non-discrimination, ban on child labor, no forced
overtime and safe working conditions. If we do our part, together we can
transform the apparel industry.

The Sweatfree NW email list will be used to announce events and campaign
updates for communities in Oregon working to make their cities and state
Sweatfree!
