Did you know that gold really isn't that good a conducter compared to 
other materials like say copper or even plain old steel? When you buy a 
new plug, the gold plated ones will be _worse_ than non gold-plated plugs. 
It is just that gold doesn't oxidize as fast as some other materials so 
potentialy, over a longer time, they might degrade less fast than other 
plugs.

In otherwords, it is yet another marketing scam.

Yeah, the customer gets ripped-off.

Yeah most of them are! But also, alot of pros really don't have a clue 
about the technicalities of their profession. And who cares anyway when it 
isn't really your own money but it does impresses the gullible clients?

Mark is entirely correct here. You can get perfectly good speaker wire 
from Home Depot or whatever and that is the type of stuff studio builders 
with a clue will use!
