search online, you can find TONS of free drum samples. no need to spend
anything.

use a softsampler in SX to trigger your previously-found drum samples.
sound forge is useful to make samples the hard way - modifying waves. do a
search for the "infected kick tutorial", and then you can make the same
kick as everyone else :)
you might also want to have a look at this old nugget:
http://www.lysator.liu.se/~zap/stomper/index2.html - decent for learning
about drum synthesis
>Also, are people using sampled kicks, or if not, is Sound Forge still a

samples are what the majority of people use, so yes you're hearing samples
(i fear you might be using the wrong words here, since the other
alternative to sampling would be on-the-fly synthesis, which i doubt many
people are doing for their kicks).

again, use samples.
BUT - you potentially have a false impression that getting good sounds, be
they kicks or synth leads, is easy. it's not. people spend a LOT of time
tweaking their sounds until they sound good, distinct, etc. there is not
magic plugin and there is no miracle sample. if you want to use a plug in,
guess what? you're actually going to have to download numerous demos and
try them until you find one you like. if you're going to use samples,
ditto.
hint: *some* people get their kicks (pun!) by bleding two kicks together,
one for the attack and another for the "body". other consider this
sacriledge. experiement.
> I agree that a lot of trance drums sound the same.
yes, but a lot of rock guitar sounds the same... it defines the genre. but
more power to anyone who wants to break the mould and forge into unknown
sonic territory! just be prepared to put in some time and effort.
