doofie, calm down... by "not liking soundcards", mark is talking about PCI
cards that you add directly to the back of a computer - as opposed to a
self-powered breakout box that you plug in via firewire or USB. the inside
of a computer is a noisy place and the main power supply wasn't made with
music in mind. having an external box with its own wall-wart, like the
presonus firebox or focusrite saffire = isolation from noisy computer. the
delta 44/66, while it has a breakout box for connections, still draws all
its power from the PCI card.
i hadn't thought of this, but it makes a lot of sense.
also, and i might be wrong again here, but i think mark meant "home use" as
in "non-critical, multimedia use" (video games, watching movies) where a
little extra noise isn't going to be too much of an issue. this, versus
pro/semi-pro audio use like more people on this forum are doing - where
we're trying to get as low noise and as high fidelity as possible.
