Yeah, I have this thing called 'attention to detail', unfortunately I
have no control over it, and it spends to much time on the wrong stuff.
I guess I just lack the right knowledge - the technical stuff I'm
actually very interested in, I just can't spend £££'s to go to college
to learn about it properly. I've got a habit of only learning what I
think I need to know when I think I need to know it, I think.

I must admit I spent a few hours the other evening trying to sort a kick
out again! Are you suggesting I go 32-bit? What sample rate are you
working in? Tell me about these building bricks - are you using someone
elses samples? I'd rather create my own.
Apart from ripped movie voices, and my percussion samples (which are
crappy 16-bit 44.1kHz), every sound and effect I try to somehow make
myself. I've started using compression on several channels (and a
limiter on master channel) now that I finally understand how they work.
I still need to learn the rules behind compressing, particular what the
limits should be for certain sounds or frequencies. I am sticking to a
rule, even if it is my own (honed from trial and error), in order to get
a mix that sounds *okay* from where I'm standing. This way I can get
all my tracks mixed the same way. I just need to tweak that rule a bit
as well I suppose.

Baffling like extreme gating and panning on shrill screaming sounds?
