Hi Pete,
Maybe it's that difference (ATA vs. SATA or something), check the specs
(laptop and hard drive). Another thing you might want to look at is,
that some manufacturers have small 'adapters' that you can fit onto the
hard-drive's interface pins...
I have a DELL laptop, which has a small separate adapter unit which
slides over these pins coming out of the harddrive. When the adapter is
in place, you hardly notice that it is actually a separate part, it
looks like one solid element of the hard drive...so take a good look at
that on your old drive. Since the old drive is broken anyway, try to see
if you can pull anything of the connector (the block of holes/pins), and
see if it comes off...if it does, you can try to put it on your new
drive's connector...
If that is not it, I guess it must be some incompatibillity issue...
