You also need to pay attention to the OS. A new laptop might come with
Vista, which may be better to have but may not (yet) support all your
devices.

Would not really recommend M-Audio. Their drivers suck and the devices can
be quirky! With M_Audio, things either work the first time or they don't and
never will.
If you also want to play out, look at the DJ Indigo PCMCIA card..worked
pretty well for me. I have now switched to the RME Hammerfall which I highly
recommend, but it is expensive and bulky...but has 8 ins/8 outs
