Well, there are professional battery-powered mic pre's, but most of those
are expensive, and work with balanced microphones. There are also
battery-powered microphones like the SONY ECM-MS907, which are
designed for walkmen/mp3 recorders. If it produces a hot enough
signal for your recorder, it might be a good option if you don't
already have a microphone. Which would be one less thing. There are
also mp3 recorders than have built-in microphones. Which would be
two less things.
Also, apparently some mp3 recorders have "plug-in power" in order to
use condenser mics without a separate mic pre, and others don't.
